Our classroom management
We provide lots of positive behavior support to our students. Some of the things we do day to day to encourage and reward them are:
- Verbal praise, encouragement, and reinforcement
- Cougar Cards
- Good News notes home
- Good phone call home
- Positive office referral
- Earning money! Students will have the opportunity to earn up to 5 cents per session (per half hour they are in the resource room). They will have the opportunity to spend the money they earn and shop for prizes on Thursday of every week.
- The class will also work to earn fish for the classroom aquarium. They will earn a sticker when they are caught being kind, responsible, hard working, or demonstrating any of the other life skills we focus on. A given number of cumulative stickers will earn an additional fish for the aquarium.
- Individual students may have separate reward systems per behavior plans, or individual checksheets.
We also strive to be fair and consistent in the management of negative behaviors. Here is our management plan for negative behaviors:
We will utilize a star system that will be posted on the board. Each student will start the day with 3 stars on the board next to their name. Three prompts/reminders will be given. After 3 reminders they will lose their first star. This correlates to the loss of 5 cents. If reminders/prompts continue to be needed they will lose their second star which means a phone call home. If the third star must be taken away, they will not be allowed to shop on Thursday. If all stars are lost for the day and there are further reminders needed they will be asked to take a time out and complete a reflection sheet reflecting on their behavior and what they could have done differently. The last step will be an office intervention.
